In May 2014, I rescued our sweet boy, Atlas. Although you'd never know it, Atlas had been a street dog in Greece up to that point. While he was a lovey, happy boy through most of his transition, by September he had turned into a ball of stress every time I'd leave him - be it for 30 seconds or three hours. What started with panting, yawning and constantly shadowing me evolved into incessant scratching, whining (shrieking), the occasional soiling of our carpet and attempts to escape anytime I had to leave him. He was so sad! I tried increasing his exercise, multiple dog park visits per day and never left him alone for more than a couple of hours. I tried natural 'de-stress' drops in his water, Thundershirts and a prescription for anti-anxiety medication from our vet. None of it worked, and in fact, it all made him despondent. To say I felt helpless is an understatement, but I could not fathom parting with him.
In January 2015, I was referred to Caryn - and it changed our lives. We followed Caryn's protocol for about a month. During that time, Atlas had his ups and downs, his good days and bad ones, but by the end of it we had our happy boy back! It was incredible. And while Atlas's anxiety will resurface from time to time, it is not nearly as severe and is only precipitated by a series of thunderstorms or when we go on vacation…a far cry from where we were in 2015.
It is difficult to put into words how amazing Caryn is - from educating us about our dog's behaviour to the 1-on-1 coaching and constant support - we owe a great deal of Atlas's happiness to her. If you are willing and able to commit to putting in the work, I have no doubt you'll see the results you (and your dog) are seeking. THANK YOU, CARYN!
I hope all is well with you. I wanted to wait to give an update when Cooper was doing super well. He's up to 6 hours being left on his own :). He's even ok being at my place on his own for up to 5 hours and I hope we can keep increasing it as time goes by. He's even relaxed being on his own without medication. I've been using the anxiety prescription only as needed on his tough days. But overall, he's improved drastically over the past few months.
When I check in on him through Skype, he's always sleeping soundly and doesn't even wait by the door. When I come home, he'll wake up to come greet me, whereas he used to wait by the door. The training you gave was what he needed and with small steps, he's a happier dog. I think he's finally got it that I will always come back to him.
Thanks for all your help. It took some time, but he's getting better as the days go by.
Wally is doing so well! He is the most amazing guy.
He is definitely in remission, dare I say... cured? He now has 2 siblings, and I think that helps. We moved about 2.5 years ago and he adjusted really well to our new place. We conquered separation anxiety and a lick granuloma! That dog and I are unstoppable!
I hope that you are doing well and I'm excited that you are doing an online course! That will be amazing and will help so many people!
Yes it's true that Harry is much better now, and we leave him alone for hours every day without issue. The only times it resurfaces to any extent are occasionally when we go away and board him, he can become more anxious, and he hates fireworks or thunder or any kind of loud noise from the sky (airshow noises). At such times we might get some stress behaviour when he's left alone like pulling all the towels onto the floor in the bathroom, and/or shredding our shower puffs. Very manageable and much preferable to the old behaviour of shredding our living room furniture!! It was certainly the work we did with you that enabled him to turn the corner from the extreme isolation distress he was experiencing back in 2014.
Sometimes I think about that time when we weren't sure if we'd be able to keep him as a pet, which was heartbreaking because we knew what a big sweetheart he is, and we certainly credit you with helping us get from there to here, which we will always be grateful for.
Get relief now, not just for your dog, but you, AND your neighbours!
